Joe’s dad, Tom Darlington, was a reluctant farmer, but
a very gifted engineer. Running the
Joseph J. White farm from 1952 until his retirement in 1995, he made some very
significant contributions to both the cranberry and the blueberry industry by
inventing mechanical pickers for both crops.
His cranberry picker is patented as the “Darlington Picker” and is still
widely used today for dry harvesting for fresh fruit. His blueberry picker has been modified
slightly, but even today’s latest and greatest blueberry pickers work off the
same principals he used for his original.
He also designed our unique cranberry cleaning equipment for our
wet-harvested cranberries.
