Fifth generation cranberry grower Joe
Darlington is the Great-Great-Grandson of Colonel James Fenwick, who purchased
property along a tributary to the Rancocas Creek, known as Cranberry Run due to the abundant
wild cranberries there. Fenwick first
cultivated cranberries for commercial sale in 1857, starting the farm we know
today as Joseph J. White, Inc. or Whitesbog.
Joe’s talents lie in engineering and good business management. (He
graduated from Swarthmore; then went on to get his Masters in biomedical
engineering fromRutgers.) He, like his forefathers, continues to stay on
the cutting edge and is always looking for ways to improve methodology,
practices, and efficiencies. You will
most often see Joe around the farm, “doing water” – which means tending the
hundreds of floodgates to manage the water through a system of reservoirs,
canals, and ditches. Or you might see
him operating our GPS guided spray booms or conferring with our fabricators,
mechanics, carpenters, and field workers to help solve problems or guide
innovations.
Joe
has very little spare time, but enjoys soaring, sailing, and driving his sports
car. He has a son, David, who is a
graduate ofBrown University and a daughter, Laura, who graduated fromCornell University
and works for an engineering firm inPrinceton,
NJ. He has been a wonderful and loving step-dad
to Brenda’s children, Juddy and Emily, as well.
Although rarely in the spotlight, he is certainly the inspiration behind
all of those lucky enough to be his family and co-workers.
