Wrote the first book on how to cultivate
cranberries.

Invented & patented the first sorting
machine to sort out both rotten and frozen fruit.

Was the first to intentionally plant a cranberry
bog (neighbors called it “White’s Folly”).

Started the highbush blueberry industry by being
first to successfully cultivate these native berries.

Were the first to market fruit with a cellophane
(clear) top to let consumer see the product.

Was the first local farm to offer educational
and health benefits (1910) to its employees.

Was home to the first Rutgers Research Field
Station to research cranberries.

Started the Tru-Blu-Berry Cooperative, the
blueberry growers’ marketing coop.

Became the first woman member (Elizabeth White) of
the American Cranberry Growers Association -- the first and oldest cranberry
grower association.

Developed the current method of planting
cranberries by disc-ing in vines with a bulldozer.

Invented the first successful mechanical
cranberry harvester, the Darlington Picker, which is still sold and used
commercially today for dry harvesting for the fresh fruit market.

Invented the first mechanical blueberry
harvester.

Were the first to use GPS guidance for sanding,
harvesting, applications, etc., pioneering “micro-precision agriculture,” reducing
pesticide risks and usage, and increasing efficiency.
A lot of history has been made here
on our farm, which has led to our being on not only the New Jersey State
Registry, but also the National Registry of Historic Landmarks. Joseph J.
White, Inc. has always been, and continues to be very cutting edge and
innovative. Continuing in that
tradition, we are still making history here at Whitesbog … where history is
harvested.
