The Darlington Picker
was invented by Joe’s dad, Tom Darlington, shortly after he came to Whitesbog
to run the farm. It has mechanical teeth
that comb the fruit off the vines, dropping them onto a conveyer that then puts
them into a container for carrying out of the bog (sometimes a burlap bag,
sometimes a plastic bin). First
introduced to the industry in 1952, it soon became the industry standard and is
still the most common method of dry picking cranberries today. They are still manufactured and sold by
Hayden Manufacturing inMassachusetts.
